The Process of Making an Abstract Painting

See how the creative process works, as the steps to creating an abstract painting are revealed.  Seeing how a painting comes together, gives you unique insight into the mind of an artist and is always a fun exercise.  Let me know what you think!
Here are the steps I took to make my painting, "Diamond - Abstract Painting."
  • I began by penciling in a grid and then adding colors that I thought my work together.  I knew the colors would be dulled down once I added layers on top.
  • Next, I began to add dashes of color across the page.  I think of these marks as letters or words travelling across a book page.  They create a sense of texture as well as disorder.
  • As I am working, I am keeping an eye on the composition and still don't really know where this painting is going to end up.
  • Eventually, I decide to leave a square section of the painting alone to maintain a stronger sense of the grid and to create a focal point.  At this point, I am not really sure if I am going to keep it yet or not.
  • Eventually, I set the painting aside and just let it be, as I work on other projects.  I keep coming back to it, however, to see how I feel about it.
  • Finally, I decide to add in the subtle diamond shape to the square.  This creates a unique look and seems to pull the entire painting together.
  • I am satisfied.
I hope you enjoyed seeing my process of painting.  This painting is for sale on this website.
