Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea is one of those timeless narratives. It isn't just a story about fishing; it's a parable of resilience, solitary endurance, and the dignity found in struggle. Over the past several months, I have immersed myself in this story, translating its epic themes into a visual narrative through a series of three watercolor paintings.

I am proud to introduce the completed series and to spotlight the final, most recent piece, which captures the very crux of Santiago’s battle.

The vision for the Series: The entire series is rendered in watercolor, a medium I felt was uniquely suited to this subject. The inherent fluidity of watercolor allows for the creation of vast, shifting seascapes, while the layering capability helps to build the quiet dignity and weathered textures of the old man himself. I wanted to capture the emotional arc of the journey—from the hopeful departure, through the desperate conflict, to the poignant return.

Part One: The Departure
We begin with the quiet focus of the departure. In this first painting, the old man, Santiago, is solitary and determined. The sky is bright with early morning light, reflecting a sense of purpose and hope. This piece establishes the old man's world—the simple wooden boat (dory), the well-used tackle, the nets, and the solitary, powerful figure focused on the journey ahead. He is at home on the water, prepared for whatever the deep sea might hold. He confidently rows out into the early morning's surf.

Part Two: The Long Return
The second painting I made for the series captures the scene after defeat. The great marlin is gone, eaten by the relentless sharks. The vibrant, warm sunset is a stark contrast to the old man's exhaustion. We see Santiago wading near his boat in shallow water, and he is not alone. Manolin, the boy who loves him, is there to help, already wading in. Other villagers are visible in the background, a community offering support after a long and tragic loss. This piece is about the strength to return and the enduring power of human connection, even in defeat.

Spotlight on the Newest Work: "Shark Attack!"
Which brings us to the final painting and the intense, missing center of this story. I knew I needed to paint the moment of the greatest conflict, the visceral battle for survival that defines the journey.

This final and most recent image is titled: The Old Man and the Sea: Shark Attack! This painting was quite technically challenging. My goal was to capture the sheer kinetic energy of the battle while simultaneously balancing the conflicting forces of light and shadow. The Old Man is tired, worn out, but he is resigned to the fight with his jaw set and his hands firmly on the oars.

The Technical Challenge of Atmosphere
The primary difficulty lay in capturing the turbulent water. Unlike the relative calm of the departure or the reflective shallows of the return, this scene demanded movement. I used dynamic, wet-on-wet watercolor techniques to allow the deep blues and greys to crash together, using dry-brush strokes to create the foam and splashing water as the turbulent ocean tosses the small boat precariously.

Simultaneously, I had to balance this cold, chaotic energy with the warm light of the setting sun. In the background, a dramatic, atmospheric sky of shifting yellows, oranges, and deep grays hangs over the horizon. This sunset light hits the churning waves from an angle, creating brilliant, warm reflections that I had to carefully preserve amidst the darker, deep-sea shadows.

Finally, at the center of this chaos is the fisherman himself. Reverting to more precise brushwork, I rendered Santiago in his worn fisherman's hat and simple sweater, his muscles straining as he uses his row not to propel the boat, but as a desperate weapon against the powerful, shadowy form of a shark visible just below the water's surface.

Bringing the Epic Narrative Home
This series is more than just illustration; it is an emotional meditation on endurance. By connecting the solitary determination of the departure to the intense, chaotic desperation of the attack, and finally to the resilient dignity of the return, this three-painting narrative aims to capture the full spectrum of Hemingway's masterpiece.

I invite you to explore the full portfolio and view each of these pieces in detail. For serious nautical art collectors and fans of classic literature, I hope these paintings serve as a powerful visual anchor for one of our greatest stories.

<img src="https://www.bruceblackart.com/uploads/1/8/7/3/18739124/old-man-and-the-sea-shark-attack-18-x-24-beach-house-setting_orig.png" alt="An elegant Beach House with Bruce Black's nautical painting of The Old Man and Sea framed on the wall. In my latest watercolor painting, titled "Generations of Grace," I wanted to capture not just that atmosphere, but the quiet, powerful transmission of faith between generations.

A Legacy of Faith: Grandmother and Grandson

The focal point of this piece is the bond between a grandmother and her grandson. In many families, grandmothers are the spiritual anchors, the ones who quietly model what devotion looks like.

In this painting, the grandmother is deep in prayer, her hands clasped in a gesture of reverence that feels practiced and familiar. Beside her, the boy isn’t looking at the altar; he is looking at her.

I chose this composition to highlight a truth about Christian heritage: we often learn how to believe by watching those we love. For collectors of traditional spiritual art, this piece serves as a reminder of that legacy—the "passing of the torch" that happens in the quiet moments of a service.

Painting Divine Light with Watercolor

As an artist and teacher, I am often asked how to represent intangible concepts—like grace or the Holy Spirit—using physical paint. For "Generations of Grace," I chose watercolor specifically for its transparency.

Unlike oil paint, where you add white pigment to create light, in watercolor, the light comes from the paper itself. To create the spiritual light streaming through the church windows and illuminating the figures, I had to carefully preserve the white of the paper.

This technique, often called "saving the white," feels metaphorically appropriate for Christian fine art. The light isn't something added on top; it is foundational, shining through the layers of color. The warm glows on the grandmother’s profile and the cool shadows in the pews create a contrast that emphasizes the warmth of the moment against the solidity of the church architecture.

Bringing "Generations of Grace" Into the Home

My goal with this original spiritual watercolor painting was to create a piece that feels both intimate and universal. Whether you are looking for art honoring grandmothers or a piece that captures the sanctity of worship, my hope is that this painting brings a sense of peace and continuity to the viewer.

Art has a unique way of freezing time. In "Generations of Grace," that fleeting Sunday morning moment is preserved, holding the light—and the love—forever.

<img src="https://www.bruceblackart.com/uploads/1/8/7/3/18739124/generations-of-grace-mockup-bruce-black_orig.png" alt="Generations of Grace watercolor painting as seen in a traditional home setting. This brilliance, filtered through fine desert dust and shaped by low humidity, produces some of the most dramatic sunrises and sunsets in the world.

For an Arizona landscape artist, these fleeting moments are more than scenery—they are a masterclass in color, temperature, and contrast. The Southwest is a place of extremes: towering monsoon clouds, vast open vistas stretching for fifty miles, and ancient rock formations weathered by time.

Watercolor allows me to create luminous washes that echo the openness of the desert, balanced by crisp, rhythmic details that reflect Arizona’s high-contrast light.
One of my favorite recent studies focuses on an agave—an iconic Sonoran Desert subject. By narrowing my attention to the architectural blue-green leaves and the weathered branches at its base, I discovered an extraordinary range of hidden color and personality. This exploration continued in Agave Bunny, inspired by a rare Sonoran Desert snowfall. As an artist, I have always been drawn to the textures of maritime life—the rusty hulls of aging vessels, the tangled nests of salt-crusted ropes, and the character found in peeling paint. This fascination has led me to begin a new series of maritime paintings focused on the intersection of human labor and the sea.

For my latest work, The Artist and the Fishermen (18" x 24" watercolor), I was struck not just by the visual complexity of the scene, but by the dignified energy of the men at work.

The Narrative: A Study of Trade and Observation
The painting depicts three fishermen deep in the rhythmic labor of sorting their catch. Behind them, the environment is a maze of fish boxes and industrial gear. In the foreground, a fourth figure—a young man holding a painting—acts as a silent witness to the scene.

By including the artist within the frame, I wanted to highlight the timeless connection between those who work the land (or sea) and those who seek to preserve those moments through art. Whether you view this as a contemporary scene or a glimpse into the past, it celebrates the ageless journey of the maritime trade.

<img src="https://www.bruceblackart.com/uploads/1/8/7/3/18739124/the-artist-and-the-fishermen-18-x-24-detail-bruce-black-art-2200_orig.jpg" alt="A detailed view of the maritime painting, The Artist and the Fisherman by Bruce Black. The result is my latest piece: a La Jolla Shores watercolor painting depicting the iconic Lifeguard Tower 33 at sunset.

<img src="https://www.bruceblackart.com/uploads/1/8/7/3/18739124/la-jolla-shores-watercolor-16-x-20-bruce-black-framed_orig.png" alt="A framed version of the watercolor painting, La Jolla Shores Lifeguard 33. The medium is fluid and slightly unpredictable, just like the ocean itself.
For this piece, I focused on the contrast between the man-made and the natural. Tower 33 is a sturdy, geometric anchor in the composition, standing tall against the soft, bleeding washes of lavender, muted orange, and pale yellow in the sky.
If you look closely at the foreground, you’ll see I used wet-on-wet techniques to paint the sand. I wanted to replicate that mirror-like reflection you get at low tide, just as the water recedes. The figures—surfers gathering by the tower—are painted as silhouettes. They could be debating catching "one last wave" or simply watching the sun dip below the horizon.

A Brief History of La Jolla Shores

<img src="https://www.bruceblackart.com/uploads/1/8/7/3/18739124/la-jolla-shores-historical-photo_orig.jpg" alt="Historical Image of La Jolla Shores Drive with Model T cars driving along the coastal road. It feels different than the rest of the area for a reason. While the main "Village" of La Jolla sits on a rocky promontory (famous for the Cove and the seals), "The Shores" is a long, flat, crescent moon expanse tucked away to the north.

From "Long Beach" to a Coastal Gem
Historically, this area was sometimes just called "Long Beach" because of its geography. For a long time, it was vast, open land. The community we know today really began taking shape in the 1920s. Developers realized this flat expanse was perfect for a more relaxed, accessible style of beach living compared to the rugged cliffs of the Village.

The Vibe Today
What’s remarkable is how it has retained its character. While much of Southern California built up rapidly, The Shores still feels accessible. It’s known for having the gentlest waves in San Diego, making it a haven for families, kayakers, and longboarders.

It has that "small town feel" my wife and I cherish. You can walk off the sand and grab a casual taco or an ice cream cone without the pretense found in other tourist hubs.

Bringing the California Coast Home

We love the sunny cliffs that frame the northern end of the beach near Scripps Pier, and we love the endless walks on the hard-packed sand.

This painting is my way of bottling that experience. Rabbits are a common sight in the Sonoran Desert, usually seen hopping amongst the cacti in the heat. But in this scene, I wanted to capture a moment of stillness. The painting features a small bunny huddled under the protective arms of a large agave, waiting out the storm while morning sunlight fights to stream through the clouds.

Watercolor Techniques: Painting Desert Snow

As an art teacher and painter, I am always looking for a balance between control and spontaneity. “Agave Bunny” was a delightful technical challenge because it required capturing the feeling of a storm without overworking the paper.
I wanted the painting to feel loose and light, mirroring the atmosphere of fresh snow. Here is a look at my process for this piece:

The Underpainting: Before tackling the subject, I laid down a light wash of yellow. This was crucial for picking up the warmth of the sunlight that is filtering through the snowstorm, preventing the painting from feeling too cold or flat.

The Agave: I painted the spines of the agave cactus quickly using washes of blue and blue-green. By working quickly, I was able to keep the movement of the leaves dynamic.

The Atmosphere: I kept the background colors cool and indistinct. This blurring effect implies the chilly weather and depth of the storm, pushing the focus to the foreground.

The Details: Once the environment was set, I painted the rocks and snow in the foreground. I saved the greatest level of detail for the rabbit, making him the focal point of the narrative.

The Final Touch: To create the effect of falling snow, I used opaque white gouache to splatter big snowflakes on top of the dry watercolor. This final step brings the storm to life and adds texture to the scene.

The result of this work is a piece that I feel is both technically strong and emotionally heartwarming. It is a reminder that even in the cold, there is shelter and light to be found.

I hope this painting brings a little bit of that quiet, desert magic into your day.
Inquire HERE for details on purchasing.

Enjoyed this painting? As an artist focused on traditional painting styles and techniques, I often find myself immersed in the richness and depth of oils, especially when creating still lives and large-scale landscapes. Yet, coming back to watercolor, my first artistic love, always feels like a refreshing reset.

This recent small-scale piece, "PA Bridge Study" (8 x 10 inches), was a wonderful exploration of mood, structure, and light—all achieved with simple washes on Arches watercolor paper using Dick Blick professional watercolor paints.

The subject is the underside of an imposing, dark gray stone bridge. It’s a study in contrasts: the heavy, almost monochromatic structure of the bridge against the luminous, warm glow of a sunset. The yellow light spills onto the water, reflecting the silhouette of a small cluster of trees on a tiny island. I aimed to capture the quiet drama of that moment, using classic watercolor techniques.

🖌️ Step-by-Step: Capturing Dramatic Contrast with Watercolor Techniques

One of the most appealing aspects of watercolor is the way you can build depth through thin, transparent layers. For those who want to try their hand at capturing this scene and practicing traditional watercolor painting, here is a simplified process focusing on the structure and the light.
Materials Used:

Paper: Arches Watercolor Paper (Cold Press recommended for texture)

Paints: Professional-grade watercolors (I used Dick Blick)

Brushes: A large round flat brush for washes, number 8 round for the majority of the painting, and a fine-tipped brush for details/lines

The Process:
Step 1: Planning and Initial Wash (The Light)

Light Sketch: Very lightly sketch the main outline of the bridge's arch and the horizon line. Keep this minimal; you want the paint to dominate.

Wet the Sky: Using clean water and your large brush, wet the area that will be the sky and the water beneath the bridge arch.

The Sunset Wash: While the paper is still damp, drop in your sunset colors. I used a mix of Payne’s Gray or a cool blue near the top, fading to a pale yellow/ochre color where the sun sets. Let the colors blend naturally. The lighter you make this wash, the brighter the final sunset will appear. Allow this layer to dry completely.

Step 2: Defining the Bridge (The Structure)

Mix the Dark Tone: Create a rich, dark gray. I mixed a strong solution of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber (or a sepia tone) to create a near-black, cool gray.

First Bridge Wash: Apply this dark gray mixture to the entire area of the bridge structure, including the support columns and the underside of the arch. This initial layer establishes the value.

Refinements: While the wash is still damp, darken the parts of the bridge that are furthest from the light source (the edges and deeper parts of the arch). Use precise lines to define the bridge's edges and architectural details, like the smaller archways on the top. Leave small, unpainted spots for the "windows" or lights under the arch. Allow this to dry completely.

Step 3: The Mid-Ground and Reflections

The Trees: Mix a very dark, dense color (like the bridge mix, but darker). Using a smaller brush, paint the silhouette of the trees on the small island. Paint them as a single, dark shape that contrasts sharply with the pale sunset sky. I mixed a combination of Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, and Prussian Blue.

The Water Reflection: The reflection on the water is crucial. Wet the water area below the trees and the bridge's arch. Drop in the same sunset yellows/ochres and the dark bridge gray near the base of the bridge. Let them bleed and soften to create a realistic, slightly disturbed surface reflection. Add the island reflections while it is still wet.

Step 4: Final Details and Darkest Accents

Deepening the Bridge: Go back to your darkest gray and use a fine-tipped brush to apply the final dark details and sharp edges on the bridge, adding a sense of weight and permanence.

Window Lights: Carefully drop a small amount of concentrated bright yellow or orange into the unpainted areas left for the lights on the bridge. This small pop of pure color draws the eye and enhances the warmth of the sunset.

Finished Look: Once dry, stand back and see if any areas need to be subtly darkened or softened with a light, clean water brush.

The resulting painting shows how the heavy, man-made structure of the bridge is temporarily softened and illuminated by a fleeting moment of natural beauty. It was a wonderful exercise in technique and feeling, and a great reminder of why I appreciate the unique challenges and rewards of traditional watercolor painting.

If you liked this painting, be sure to check out my most recent work for sale HERE.

FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM

Carmel Morning Light: An Original Seascape Oil Painting

https://www.bruceblackart.com/artfulacademiablog/carmel-morning-light-an-original-seascape-oil-painting

https://www.bruceblackart.com/artfulacademiablog/carmel-morning-light-an-original-seascape-oil-painting#comments

Uncategorized

About the PaintingThis new work is a small (8” x 10”) original oil painting on canvas panel, created from a photograph I took during a trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea. It is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth, with a stunningly rugged coastline and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean.

One of our favorite activities there is to rent electric bikes and ride the famous 17-Mile Drive. It's an amazing experience, allowing you to zip right along the coast and past the gorgeous golf courses, stopping whenever you wish to take a picture. We usually ride all the way out to the Pebble Beach Golf Resort for lunch in the café before turning around. This painting was inspired by one of those perfect moments we found along the way.

Painting Details:

Title: Carmel Rocks and Surf

Medium: Oil on canvas panel

Size: 8" x 10"

Status: Available for purchase. [www.bruceblackart.com]

<img src="https://www.bruceblackart.com/uploads/1/8/7/3/18739124/carmel-rocks-and-surf-framed-8-x-10-bruce-black_orig.jpg" alt="A black plein air style frame frames bright seascape painting with sunlight hitting the waves and rocks of a coastline. It's a dialogue between the delicate, symbolic world of the still life and the enduring, majestic presence of nature. On the surface, it might seem an unusual pairing: two vibrant lemons and a metallic cup set against a dramatic mountain range under a dawning sky. But delve a little deeper, and you'll find layers of meaning that have captivated artists for centuries.

The Enduring Symbolism of the Lemon
For art enthusiasts, especially those familiar with the Dutch Golden Age, the lemon is far more than just a citrus fruit. It's a rich tapestry of symbolism:

Wealth and Luxury: During the Dutch Republic, lemons were exotic, imported commodities. Their presence in a painting signaled prosperity, global trade, and the refined taste of the owner.

Bittersweet Nature of Life: This is perhaps the most poignant meaning. The lemon's bright, inviting appearance belies its sharp, sour taste. This contrast became a powerful metaphor for the mix of pleasure and disappointment inherent in life itself—the good and the bad, joy and sorrow.

Memento Mori and Transience: A partially peeled lemon, as seen in my painting, is a classic memento mori motif. Like the fading beauty of the fruit once its skin is broken, it serves as a gentle reminder of the fleeting nature of life, wealth, and earthly pleasures. It encourages contemplation on our own mortality and the passage of time.

Artist's Skill: From a technical perspective, rendering the intricate curl and texture of a peeled lemon was a true test of an artist's ability to depict realism, perspective, and light. It showcased mastery.

Bridging Two Worlds: Still Life Meets Landscape
In "Lemons and Mountains," I deliberately placed these symbolically charged lemons, along with a reflective metallic cup, on a vibrant red surface in the foreground. This intimate arrangement, so often confined to an interior setting, is dramatically opened up to a vast landscape. The still life elements speak of human experience – our desires, our fleeting joys, our inevitable end. They represent the "here and now."

The background, with its rugged mountains just touched by the warm, early light of dawn under a dark sky, introduces another dimension. Mountains symbolize permanence, strength, and the eternal. They stand sentinel, largely unchanged by the passage of human generations. The dawn light hints at new beginnings, hope, and the timeless cycle of nature that continues regardless of individual lives.

A Personal Reflection
My aim with this piece was to create a visual dialogue between these two realms: the personal and the universal, the temporary and the eternal. It's an invitation to consider how our individual lives, with all their bittersweet moments, unfold against the backdrop of something much larger and more enduring. The painting asks us to reflect on our place within the grand scheme, finding both humility in our transience and beauty in our existence.

"Lemons and Mountains" is an 11 x 14 inch oil painting, a medium that allows for rich textures and deep colors, further enhancing the contrast and symbolism within the piece.

I invite you to spend some time with "Lemons and Mountains" and consider what this dialogue means to you.

<img src="https://www.bruceblackart.com/uploads/1/8/7/3/18739124/lemons-and-mountains-11-x-14-bruce-black-2025-copy_orig.jpg" alt="Detail of a realistic lemon painting. Growing up in Arizona and spending years exploring its diverse landscapes—from Northern Arizona’s high deserts to the Tetons of Wyoming—these regions have deeply shaped both my personal history and my artistic vision.

My goal is to go beyond depicting the physical beauty of these places. I seek to capture the emotional and spiritual essence of the land—moments when light and shadow create a sense of mystery, introspection, and awe.
