The musings of a landscape painter, art teacher, and art history lover
I have always been captivated by the world of still life painting, and my latest creation, "Oranges With Mayan King," is a testament to the unique challenges and rewards this art form offers. While still life shares some common ground with landscape painting, it diverges in its demand for a meticulous level of precision and attention to detail. In the realm of landscape painting, artists often have the liberty to alter elements—reshape mountains, shift trees, or even transform the entire color palette. In contrast, still life painting demands a heightened sense of exactness right from the initial setup. The arrangement of forms becomes a critical endeavor, with careful consideration given to textures, sizes, and the symbolic significance each object carries. Creating visual unity among seemingly unrelated items requires creativity in the setup. Yet, once the display is established and the light source comes into play, the artist must faithfully capture what unfolds before them, showcasing the utmost dedication and skill. Akin to poetry, a still life is a visual composition where each element carries weight and meaning. The viewer can choose to appreciate it on a surface level, admiring the beautifully painted objects, or delve deeper into the layers of metaphor and symbolism embedded within. This parallels the nuanced nature of poetry, where words can be taken at face value or interpreted metaphorically. Drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of Dutch still life paintings of the 17th century, where symbolism abounds, my work, "Oranges With Mayan King," seeks to blend the tangible and the symbolic. The careful arrangement of a blue vase, oranges, and a statuette of King Pakal creates a striking contrast. Symbolically, the oranges represent various layers—from the geographical references of South America to spiritual abundance and even alluding to the Holy Trinity. The painting invites viewers to contemplate the interplay of paganism and Christianity, exploring the tension between different belief systems or simply marveling at the wonder of the divine in human existence. As an artist, my primary excitement lies in the challenges of capturing the image itself. The meticulous process of getting the colors just right, observing the play of light, shadow, and color in the objects, and discovering new details over the course of several painting sessions are all part of the enchanting journey. Each object reveals a universe of intricacies when viewed with a discerning eye. More Paintings by Bruce Black
