The musings of a landscape painter, art teacher, and art history lover
In the 1970s, my grandfather, Paul Wilson, made an investment in a parcel of land nestled in the tranquil woods of Northern Arizona. Armed with an O'Mally cabin kit, he undertook the task of constructing what would become our cherished family cabin. Through the passage of time, this cabin has become an heirloom, a cherished retreat now under the ownership of us, the grandchildren. It stands as more than just a structure; it is my sanctuary, my Walden's cabin—a place where I seek solace and rejuvenation.
Capturing a slice of this haven, the painting titled "Stoneman Meadow" immortalizes a view that has always held a special place in my heart. A meandering path traces the perimeter of what was once a shallow lake, now intermittently reclaiming its liquid form. These days, however, the lake has transformed into a picturesque meadow, adorned with a burst of colorful blooms in the summer and spring. The loop around this enchanting landscape has been a familiar route in my life, a journey I've taken countless times—perhaps in the hundreds by now. The specific scene I chose to immortalize in paint is a natural resting spot along the trail. Nestled beneath the comforting shade of ancient trees, it offers a respite for the weary traveler. A sturdy rock serves as a perfect perch, inviting one to pause and absorb the serene panorama of the meadow stretching out before them. As you explore this painting, I hope it transports you to the peaceful ambiance of Stoneman Meadow, invoking a sense of tranquility and connection with nature.
