The musings of a landscape painter, art teacher, and art history lover
I'm very fond of this painting. It recalls an early morning in June 2022, when I was hiking on North Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. The monsoon storms were erupting all around the valley, with brilliant bursts of dawn light diffused through the clouds. As I turned, I could see curtains of rain along the horizon to the east, north, and west. Occasionally, a burst of lightning would flash in the distance. Yet, where I was, was dry and cool. It was an amazing morning in the southwestern desert!
I created this painting as a demo at my school. It is helpful to have a painting in progress in the classroom, as it gives students an idea of what goes into a making a professional painting. The students can follow my progress and ask questions while working on their own class projects. Some of them even offer helpful advice! This landscape painting is 16"X20" and on stretched canvas.
