Abstract Watercolor Paintings by Bruce Black

The colors and light of the Arizona desert are often infused in my work, as can be seen in these colorful paintings. I was recently inspired by a trip to the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens, at which, I was able to see the artist, Dale Chihuly's blown glass assemblages interacting with the Desert Botanical gardens environment. The bright colors of the blown glass, along with the more muted gray and green tones of the Sonoran Desert cacti, were beautifully arranged. As a remembrance of those gardens, I created this most recent series of paintings.
I continue to experiment with the language of mark-making, creating meaning through personal symbols and dashes of paint. In addition to the desert, my artwork references calligraphy, old manuscripts, and personal journals. Meaning is derived through the abstract elements coordinating to make what ultimately is a meditation. They are meant to be thoughtful, quiet, and a bit mysterious.
I continue to live and paint in Phoenix, Arizona. As an Arizona artist, I am spoiled by the stunning blue sky, the Sonoran Desert, the Northern Arizona pines, and the beautiful and spiritual high plateau region. It is easy to find inspiration here.
