Welcome to Bruce Black Art. As a professional Phoenix-based traditional landscape painter, I draw my inspiration from the stunning deserts, mountains, and skies that surround me, as well as the breathtaking shores of the Pacific coast. Nature is my inexhaustible muse, and I am grateful to be able to capture its essence in original fine art.

Whether I am hiking the trails of the Sonoran Desert or exploring the cliffs of Carmel-by-the-Sea, I am constantly inspired by the rich textures and colorations of the natural world. Recently, I have been deeply focused on re-studying oil painting techniques associated with the master painters of the Baroque and Impressionist eras. By combining these foundational skills with my lifelong love of watercolor, I am able to create stronger, lasting images that capture the authentic spirit of Southwestern and California coastal landscapes.

My journey in art began early when my grandparents introduced me to gallery openings in Scottsdale and gifted me my first painting supplies. I went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Arizona in 1993, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Delaware in 1998. After working and teaching at Willamette University in Oregon, I felt drawn back to the warmth of Arizona. For the past 30 years, I have had the privilege of teaching art, and I continue to find joy in sharing traditional painting techniques with my high school students.

Today, I live in Phoenix with my loving wife, Marla, and our wonderful son, Liam. When I am not in the studio or the classroom, you can find me golfing or hiking the desert trails.
