This little painting, called Ashcan in Winter, has a special place in my heart. The can is old, probably an antique. It has a copper exterior with a wooden ring on the bottom and a brass handle on the top. Having sat in front of the fireplace at my cabin for over forty years now, it has been used by generations to dump the ashes out. A fun moment is when the ashes are dumped into the snow, and they give a satisfying hiss. Of course, one must remember to dump ashes downwind, a lesson I do not seem able to learn. I often go back into the house peppered with ash dust!
This painting was completed on a stretched canvas and is part of a new project I am working on. After several years of painting abstractly in watercolor, I have been enjoying switching gears to more traditional oil painting. I'm loving it!
