While I had many options to choose from, I chose these 30 images as the top thirty works of art for a couple of reasons. First, they are images that are part of the collective consciousness and permeate our society. Second, I was looking for pieces that represented the various art movements from the Italian renaissance up to 1960s Pop Art. I did not select an image for every movement that occurred in that time span. For example, there are no paintings from the Romantic era, arguably a more important era than that of the Impressionists. However, going back to my first criteria, I was looking for iconic works that I know my students will see throughout their lives. One exception to this rule was my inclusion of George Braque's, Woman With a Guitar. While this painting is not widely known the way Warhol's Campbell's soup cans are, it does stand in as a general representation of the cubist style invented by Braque and Picasso. Since I already had an example of Picasso's work, I wanted to include Braque. This inclusion allows for discussion on this movement and how it has affected future art movements. Another interesting choice was the inclusion of the Great Wave of Kanagawa. This is the only artwork that is not from the western tradition. However, it is an iconic work of art that is known worldwide. It also represents the shift that occurred in western art after the Asian continent opened to European trading in the 1800s. The Eastern style of design and decoration was highly influential in terms of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism and forever changed the art world's view of space on a two-dimensional surface.
