About the Painting
This new work is a small (8” x 10”) original oil painting on canvas panel, created from a photograph I took during a trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea. My goal was to capture the beautiful morning light dancing off the waves and rocks just as the sun was coming up. The real focus of this seascape painting is the dramatic interplay of light and shadow. I worked to convey how the light interacts with the rich colors of the water, the texture of the frothy surf, and the deep, weathered surfaces of the coastal rocks. The Inspiration: A Trip to Carmel My wife, Marla, and I love to visit Carmel. It is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth, with a stunningly rugged coastline and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. One of our favorite activities there is to rent electric bikes and ride the famous 17-Mile Drive. It's an amazing experience, allowing you to zip right along the coast and past the gorgeous golf courses, stopping whenever you wish to take a picture. We usually ride all the way out to the Pebble Beach Golf Resort for lunch in the café before turning around. This painting was inspired by one of those perfect moments we found along the way.
