The musings of an artist, art teacher, and art history lover
The Magic of Snow in the Sonoran DesertLiving in Arizona, we get used to the heat, the sun, and the dry air. But every so often, nature surprises us. Snow in the desert is a rare event—a fleeting miracle that transforms the rugged landscape into something soft and ethereal. Even though it usually melts quickly, Arizona residents always delight in the magic while it lasts. My latest piece, “Agave Bunny” (16” x 20” watercolor), is a tribute to that fleeting moment. The inspiration for this scene came from imagining the quiet lives of the desert wildlife during these storms. Rabbits are a common sight in the Sonoran Desert, usually seen hopping amongst the cacti in the heat. But in this scene, I wanted to capture a moment of stillness. The painting features a small bunny huddled under the protective arms of a large agave, waiting out the storm while morning sunlight fights to stream through the clouds. Watercolor Techniques: Painting Desert Snow As an art teacher and painter, I am always looking for a balance between control and spontaneity. “Agave Bunny” was a delightful technical challenge because it required capturing the feeling of a storm without overworking the paper. I wanted the painting to feel loose and light, mirroring the atmosphere of fresh snow. Here is a look at my process for this piece:
The result of this work is a piece that I feel is both technically strong and emotionally heartwarming. It is a reminder that even in the cold, there is shelter and light to be found. I hope this painting brings a little bit of that quiet, desert magic into your day. Inquire HERE for details on purchasing. Enjoyed this painting? Check out all of my latest watercolors HERE.
