6 Most Famous Arizona Landscape Artists: A Master Class in Southwestern Art

Ed Mell, Mountains
Arizona has a long history of inspiring artists from around the world, particularly those drawn to its unique and diverse geography. From the starkness of the Sonoran Desert to the high-altitude vistas of the north, the state’s landscapes have been immortalized in countless oil and watercolor masterpieces.
In this guide, I explore the lives and works of six iconic Arizona landscape artists. I chose these individuals based on their deep roots in the state and their significant cultural impact on the art world. Whether you are an art student or a collector of Southwestern art, these painters provide the perfect starting point for understanding the "Grand Canyon State."

1. Ed Mell: The Architecture of the Desert

A Painting of Arizona's monsoon clouds over mountains by Ed Mell.
Ed Mell (1942–) is a contemporary master who has lived and worked in Arizona for over 40 years. He is best known for his stylized, angular paintings of rugged mountains and dramatic monsoon skies.
  • Style & Impact: Mell’s work bridges the gap between traditional representation and modern abstraction. His use of bold, vibrant colors captures the high-energy light of the desert.
  • Where to See His Work: His paintings are featured in the collections of the Phoenix Art Museum, the Tucson Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
  • The Artist’s Perspective: As a fellow painter, I am constantly inspired by Mell’s ability to simplify complex geological forms into powerful geometric shapes without losing the "feeling" of the landscape.

2. Maynard Dixon: The Poetry of the American West

A painting of Northern Arizona's red rock cliffs.
A landscape painting of Arizona's dramatic desert sky.
A painting of the Indian reservation in Arizona with clouds and cliffs.
A landscape painting of rain showers over the desert.
Maynard Dixon (1875–1946) was a titan of 20th-century Western art. He spent significant time in Arizona, capturing the stark beauty of the desert and the quiet dignity of its inhabitants.
  • Style & Impact: Dixon’s "low horizon" compositions emphasize the vastness of the Western sky. His work remains an iconic representation of the American West.
  • Where to See His Work: You can find his masterpieces at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
  • The Artist’s Perspective: Dixon’s use of negative space and his mastery of "Tonalism" are essential studies for any student looking to capture the atmospheric scale of Arizona.

3. Merrill Mahaffey: Landscapes of Light and Color

A realistic landscape painting of the light on the Colorado river in the Grand Canyon.
A landscape painting exploring the color of Arizona's high country cliffs.
An abstracted view of the unique desert of the American Southwest.
A painting of colorful rocks in the southwest of the United States.
Merrill Mahaffey (1937–) is a contemporary artist who has spent over five decades documenting the Arizona wilderness. His work often focuses on the intricate textures of canyon walls and the play of light on water.
  • Style & Impact: Mahaffey’s paintings are celebrated for their technical precision and their ability to convey the natural beauty of the state's rock formations.
  • Where to See His Work: Look for his work in the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and the Phoenix Art Museum.
  • The Artist’s Perspective: Mahaffey’s work is a lesson in color theory. His ability to find "cool" shadows within the "warm" desert palette is something I often reference in my own watercolor classes.

4. Ted DeGrazia: The Vibrant Soul of the Southwest

A landscape painting of horses running wild.
Ettore "Ted" DeGrazia (1909–1982) was perhaps Arizona’s most prolific and popular artist. He is famous for his colorful, whimsical depictions of desert life and indigenous cultures.
  • Style & Impact: His impressionistic, movement-heavy style is instantly recognizable. His "Gallery in the Sun" in Tucson remains a major cultural landmark.
  • Where to See His Work: The DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun is a must-visit for anyone interested in the intersection of Arizona art and architecture.

5. William Herbert "Buck" Dunton: The Classic Frontier

A landscape painting of an Arizona cowboy playing the harmonica on a horse.
William Herbert Dunton (1878–1936) was a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists and a prominent figure in early 20th-century Arizona art.
  • Style & Impact: Dunton’s work captured the "Old West" just as it was beginning to disappear. His paintings are rugged, narrative, and deeply focused on the relationship between the land and the people.
  • Where to See His Work: His paintings are held by the Gilcrease Museum and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

6. Marjorie Helen Thomas: A Pioneer of Desert Vistas

Marjorie Helen Thomas (1885–1978) was a trailblazing artist who lived and worked in Arizona for over 30 years. Though she lived in the 20th century, her work captured a timeless, classical view of the desert.
  • Style & Impact: Her paintings often depict quiet desert scenes and mountain vistas. She is an artist who deserves greater modern recognition for her contribution to Arizona's visual history.
  • Where to See His Work: Representative pieces can be found in the Tucson Museum of Art and the Phoenix Art Museum.
  • The Artist’s Perspective: Thomas had a remarkable gift for rendering the subtle greens and purples of desert flora—a challenge for any landscape painter.

Final Thoughts from the Studio

Arizona continues to be a mecca for landscape painters. Whether you are drawn to the rugged desert terrain or the snow-capped northern peaks, these six artists show us how to celebrate the beauty of the Southwest through art.
