Shop for prints and original art from my abstract series

These colorful abstract paintings come from my "Written Picture Project." They are original watercolor paintings on paper and are mostly limited to fine vertical dashes that move across the page similar to words or letters.  Within the dashes you will find sweeping washes of color along with primitive symbols such as crosses, triangles, boxes, etc.  The symbols represent a sense of spirituality, the mystery of life and our place in the universe.  Overall, the paintings are meant to be quiet and introspective.  Take your time looking at them and enjoy life!

The Written Picture Project

I have begun a new series of abstract watercolor paintings which, loosely, I am referring to as my written picture project.  This idea began with a sketchbook that I decided to "write." The idea was to limit myself to a series of dashes, single vertical brushstrokes, that moved across the page similar to the way letters and words work themselves laterally.  I spaced the dashes in different ways and shifted from looser applications to more controlled lines.  In this manner, I filled the sketchbook.

While painting, I focused on my mood and tried to use the time as a meditative period to re-focus and de-stress.  The process of just applying dashes was the perfect antidote to the chaos of being an art teacher and really gave me sense of calm and joy as I worked.  The pages act as a record of my spiritual position for the day. Some are dark and chaotic, while others are soft, bright, and still.  Washes of color establish the mood and break up the dashes.

Eventually, I began to add in my own personal symbols, such as crosses or boxes.  Most of these don't have any logical equivalent outside of reality, which I'm aware of at least.  Rather, they carry a weight, a feeling about them that stands as a point of inner reference. I should add that at some point, I began to draw an X across the entire page, dividing it into four separate triangles, which I then filled with dashes.  I felt that those exes represented broken glass.

Since completing that sketchbook, I have been working on various sized paintings following the same practice and am excited to see where this will carry me.  The paintings bring to mind so many things and are, on one level, a discussion of how we process information, how we interpret meaning.  They call to mind old illuminated manuscripts, as well as the binary digits trailing through computers.  They seem to be codes asking to be cracked, as if with enough study, the universe will open up, but they also remain as simple brushstrokes and watercolor paint, color and line.  I have been thinking about how we read words as clusters, shapes, etc. and instantly put meaning to them.  The landscape also seems to be very present in these pieces as well as an feeling of weaving.  There is a lot to be unpacked in this body of work, and I am just getting started.
